Interesting meeting...
Student assessment was the focus of our vertical team meeting today...not everyone is on board. Why do we have to assess? Who is making us do this? Frustrating as a facilitator, when intrinsic motivation is not present and so much energy is put forth in opposition to something that has to be done. Arghhhhh!

what is a "vertical team meeting?" How is it different from a normal team meeting?
ReplyDeleteoh btw, I noticed you sent me an email titled "Review and Submit" for part 2 of the group project, but my Mavmail bugs out whenever I log in since yesterday, so I haven't been able to read it. That said, I think what we have on the doc is fine, though we may want to delete the "Step 1, Step 2" stuff in big print. Your call.

ReplyDeleteI think it is amazing that in the field of PE and fitness that people are resistant to assessment. When I think of PE and fitness I think about improving performance, endurance, etc., even in elementary school; and how do you measure these without some type of assessment? Even with elementary students, if these teachers don't assess students, how do they measure student achievement? What does the admin have to say about this? The leadership in this should be coming from more than just you.
ReplyDeleteVertical Teams are teams in a specific discipline but across grade levels...for example Math teachers at the High School meet as a department and may find time to meet with some JH Math teachers but they never get to meet with 2nd grade Math teachers. We always talk scope and sequence but how much cooperation or even continuity is represented in that model? It is about having time to meet k-12 and collaborate to improve instruction across grade level leading to higher levels of student success.
ReplyDeleteScott - I understand what you are saying above, however are these teachers "MAD" (crazy), why would they not want to assess? Is that not how a teacher should be testing to see if a student is learning?
